Pharmaceuticals & biotechnology
For more than three decades, Head Engineering has designed and delivered process plants for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Our role ranges from specialist process design to full EPCM responsibility for API, biotech and vaccine production facilities.
We understand how process, equipment and GMP requirements interact – and how to turn a process concept into a safe, robust and validated production line.
What we deliver
- Concept and feasibility studies for new or modified production lines
- Basic and detailed design of process systems, clean utilities and CIP/SIP
- Layout, piping and 3D modelling for cleanroom and non-classified areas
- Automation concepts and functional specifications, in cooperation with automation partners
- Qualification support: DQ, IQ and OQ documentation and execution
- Construction management, commissioning, training and hand-over
Experience from complete plants
Head Engineering has acted as project or design partner for a broad range of pharmaceutical and biotech facilities, including:
- Chemical synthesis plants for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) with full project management, design, procurement and start-up responsibility
- Biotech production lines for harvest, purification and aseptic final filling, supplied with associated CIP systems and clean utilities
- Multipurpose biotech plants and chromatography-media facilities, where we have led engineering from basic design through detailed design, 3D-modelling and qualification
- Upgrades of existing facilities, including packaging lines, ventilation and cooling systems, and modernisation of older API plants to current GMP standards
These projects span Europe, Asia and North America and cover everything from greenfield plants to complex rebuilds inside live production sites.
How we work with pharma and biotech projects
We normally work as an integrated part of the client’s project organisation:
- translating process and quality requirements into practical equipment and layout solutions
- coordinating specialist partners in automation, electrical and civil engineering
- preparing documentation that supports both regulatory filings and efficient operation of the plant.
Whether the need is a new process line or a targeted upgrade, our aim is the same: a safe, compliant facility that is straightforward to operate and expand
