Engineering for resource efficiency
Sustainability at Head Engineering starts in the process design. Our projects are built to use raw materials, energy and utilities as efficiently as possible.
- Turning kraft soap into high-value tall oil with the PINOLA portfolio, increasing yield from existing pulp mills instead of building new capacity.
- Recovering valuable oil from slop-oil streams and returning cleaned water to the site, reducing disposal volumes.
- Designing biofuel, chemical and biotech processes that minimise solvent losses and optimise heat integration wherever possible.
- Our role is often to help customers upgrade or debottleneck existing plants, which typically has a much lower environmental footprint than greenfield capacity.
Safety, HSE and zero-harm mindset
Many of our projects take place in high-hazard environments: explosives, acids, solvents, high pressures and temperatures. A strong HSE culture is therefore central to how we work.
- Documented HSE policy, work-permit routines and risk assessments, with a long-term goal of zero harm to people and the environment.
- Systematic use of HAZOP and other structured reviews together with our customers and independent specialists.
- Process layouts that reduce manual handling, avoid unnecessary inventory of hazardous materials and provide clear escape routes and zoning.
- High level of automation with interlocks, monitoring and alarms to keep the plant in a safe state even if something goes wrong.
Safe plants are sustainable plants – fewer incidents mean less waste, fewer emissions and more reliable production.
Compliance and lifecycle thinking
Sustainability is also about long-term responsibility.
- Support with environmental and production permits and other statutory requirements as part of our project scope.
- Design choices that consider the full lifecycle: maintainability, service access, cleanability and possibilities for future upgrades rather than replacements.
- Clear documentation and training so that operating teams can run the plant safely and efficiently over many years.
Across pulp and paper, oil recovery, pharmaceuticals, biofuels and explosives, our ambition is the same: to combine industrial performance with safer workplaces and a smaller environmental footprint.
