Electrical & Automation Systems

Automation and electrical power distribution are critical to achieving safe, efficient and repeatable operation in modern process plants. Head Engineering delivers electrical and automation solutions for pulp and paper, tall oil, chemical and explosives-related plants.

Our core strength lies in translating process requirements into structured concepts and functional specifications. We develop control strategies, operating philosophies, alarm and interlock structures, safety functions and electrical design criteria, ensuring that DCS/PLC and electrical systems are engineered in a consistent and robust manner.

We work according to established standards and guidelines such as ISA S88, ISA S95 and GAMP. In most projects, we collaborate with specialised electrical and automation partners selected together with the client. This enables us to take full responsibility for the E&A scope while leveraging experienced suppliers.

Depending on the project, our scope includes:

  • Defining the overall control, HMI and electrical concept
  • Preparing functional design descriptions, I/O lists and load lists
  • Specifying and reviewing MCCs, distribution boards and control cabinets
  • Electrical documentation such as single-line diagrams, cable lists and loop diagrams
  • Coordination and review of partner engineering
  • Delivery of the full E&A scope (hardware, software, FAT, SAT) together with partners
  • Support during commissioning, start-up and operator training

By combining deep process understanding with structured E&A design and long-term collaboration with leading suppliers, we ensure alignment between process design and automation, reducing project risk and improving plant performance. This enables us to deliver reliable, safe and operable solutions for complex process plants – including VisPro explosives plants and PINOLA tall oil installations.
